Car Diagnostics in Ellenbrook

Something is wrong with your car and nobody can tell you what. A light is on. It runs rough. It keeps losing coolant and you cannot see where. That is what a proper diagnostic is for.

What a car diagnostic actually is

Modern cars are full of computers. Sensors watch the engine, the gearbox, the brakes and the exhaust. When a reading falls outside what the car expects, it stores a fault code.

A scan reads those codes and tells us where to start looking. It can flag trouble in the engine, transmission, exhaust and brakes, plus fuel injectors, air flow, coolant, ignition coils and the throttle. The car usually knows something is wrong long before you can feel it, and finding a fault early is almost always cheaper than repairing the damage it causes.

A fault code is a clue, not an answer

A code points at a circuit or a system. It does not tell you which part failed, or why. Reading a code and selling you the part named in it is guessing with extra steps.

So after the scan, we test. Pressure tests. Live data while the engine runs. Wiring and connectors. Eyes on the actual part. Then we tell you what we found, what it will take to fix, and what can wait.

Mercedes C200 that kept overheating

A 2017 Mercedes-Benz C200 came in overheating. The scan showed fault codes on the electric thermostat, but a full diagnosis found two faults, not one. The electric water pump had failed as well.

We replaced the pump and the thermostat, flushed the coolant, then calibrated the new thermostat so it reads engine temperature correctly. Stopping at the first code would have left the car still overheating. Read the full job.

BMW X6 towed in with a stuck handbrake

A 2013 BMW X6 arrived on a tow truck, running rough with the electric handbrake jammed on. Two separate problems in one car.

Diagnostics traced the handbrake to an internal fault in the module. We replaced it and coded the new module to the car, which a basic scan tool cannot do. More testing found injector number 6 was faulty, so that was replaced too. Read the full job.

Porsche Macan GTS losing coolant

A Porsche Macan GTS was showing signs of a coolant leak with nothing obvious on the floor. We ran a coolant pressure test to find it. The leak was a pipe sitting underneath the intake manifold, which is a hard place to reach and an easy place to miss.

We removed the parts in the way, replaced the pipe, then flushed the system. Read the full job.

Toyota Corolla health check with nothing wrong

Not every diagnostic starts with a problem. A Toyota Corolla came in for a logbook service, and we ran a diagnostic health check and a major inspection at the same time. You do not have to wait for a warning light to get the car looked over properly. That is the point. Read the full job.

Same with a Volvo XC90 in for a routine service. The car seemed fine. The inspection found a leaking coolant hose and rear brakes that would not have safely reached the next service. Read the full job.

Signs your car needs a diagnostic

• The engine light is on, or any warning light you do not recognise
• It runs rough, misfires or stalls
• The temperature gauge climbs, or there is a sweet smell after a drive
• Coolant or oil is dropping and there is no puddle to explain it
• The gearbox hunts, jerks or slips
• Electrics are behaving oddly: windows, handbrake, sensors, warning chimes
• It was scanned somewhere else and still is not fixed

Do not keep topping up coolant and hoping. On a VW Golf we repaired, a leaking heater core was dumping coolant inside the cabin behind the dashboard. Coolant is toxic, and the vapour ends up in the air you breathe. Read the full job.

Questions we get asked

The light came on and then went off. Do I still need a check?

Yes. The code normally stays stored in the car's memory after the light goes out, so we can still read it. An intermittent fault that fixes itself usually comes back, and it is easier to chase while the record is fresh.

Can you code and program modules, or just read codes?

We code. On the BMW X6 above, the replacement handbrake module had to be coded to the car before it would work. On the Mercedes C200, the new thermostat had to be calibrated after fitting. Neither job finishes without that step.
